Slow Tourism: Travelling in style in Catalonia

November 12, 2021

Catalonia’s varied landscapes and climate types make it the perfect destination for Slow Tourism: eco-friendly accommodations, chefs who use local products and loads of activities and experiences centred around well-being.

The Catalan Tourist Office is currently re-evaluating the existing offer in terms of Slow Tourism and has developed new experiences that dovetail with this philosophy. Tourist products and services must meet certain criteria in order to be considered ‘Slow’. For instance, they must be carried out individually or in small groups with a local guide (or on one’s own initiative) and organised by a travel agent who is in close contact with local providers.

Additionally there are a number of requirements relating to accommodations, meals, transport and activities:

·       Accommodations: small family businesses or farms that work with local suppliers;

·       Nutrition: all proposed meals must promote local products and gastronomy;

·       Transport: sustainable mobility (public transport, but also cycling and hiking) as well as the use of less busy routes must be encouraged.

·       Activities must contribute to the protection of the natural and cultural heritage of the destination and must foster a better relationship with the local population.

Slow Tourism makes it possible to discover some of the lesser known places in Catalonia, in an environmentally conscious manner and at a leisurely pace.
